First Impression: e.l.f. Cosmetics x Jackie Aina Eye Palette “J Glow”

One of our favorite black beauty bloggers Jackie Aina has collabed with e.l.f. Cosmetics to bring us the perfect eye & cheek palette! This super compact, travel-ready palette is packed with some unexpected colors that are meant to inspire your inner *J.GLOW*. Want to see my first impression and swatches? Keep scrolling!

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of ELF.

Yes, their prices ensure everyone can purchase whatever their heart desires, but I’d rather pay more for better quality makeup. No knock to ELF, they found their niche and stuck with it! But with so many other brands packed with quality and competitive prices, I always walk right past the ELF displays in the drugstore.

Not going to lie, I was a little surprised by Jackie Aina’s announcement that she was collabing with ELF Cosmetics on a palette. And her reason partially being that she was impressed by ELF’s commitment to quality – I was left shaking my head! Was this palette going to be a game-changer? Was ELF going to ramp up its powder formula for my melanin makeup lovers? I NEEDED to know the answers so of course I purchased two palettes to test. And by test, I mean support Jackie with my coins. =)

First impression – I didn’t love the palette. The taupe matte and shimmer colors leave me wanting more pigmentation. The matte was especially chalky, it flaked the first time I swatched it, and would not grab on to my shadow brush to save its life. But, was I expecting NARS quality shadows for $6? No, I came into this with realistic expectations and loving the entire palette was not one of them.

If you think about it, I would happily pay $5 for one shadow from a Looxi or a ColourPop, so if I could just find ONE diamond in the rough, the palette would have been worth it. I can happily say the cool sapphire shade more than did it for me. The color is beauuuutiiful on brown skin and the pigmentation is perfect. I could pick it up with my finger for a swatch just as easily as swipe my brush into it. Another winner, the matte cool brown. I already have a ton of deep browns, but not many cool-toned ones. I was happy with the color payoff and overall how it performed on my skin.

Would I buy this palette again knowing that I only likes 2/5 shades? Absolutely, no hesitation YES. I could hate all the shades and still purchase this. Why? Because I want to support Jackie and if spending my money to support a fellow black beauty blogger will show brands that there is value in the collaboration then I will happily throw my $6 at them! I hope to see more from Jackie in the future and if this palette does re-stock, I hope you will purchase it as well!

First Impression: Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit ‘Sweets’

Beauty powerhouse Anastasia Beverly Hills just released her fourth and fifth Glow Kits last week to a bunch of frenzied beauty fanatics who bought them up like hotcakes! I purchased the ‘Sweets’ Glow Kit and I’m definitely loving it, but I can’t help but compare several of the shades to a few already in my collection. Is it worth the buy? Or can you get away with ‘the look for less’? Read on to find out!

I absolutely love the concept of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit – having four highlights in the same packaging, ready for travel – it’s great! I previously purchased ‘That Glow’ and it is so beautiful on deep skin, I highly recommend it. However, the Glow Kit in ‘Sweets’ is a little more fun and it’s got a mix of colors.

When I purchased it, I thought for sure I didn’t have any of these colors in my collection already. The announcement and release were a whirlwind so I hadn’t seen any swatches or any non-professional product shots before I hit that ‘Add to Cart button. Once I received and swatched it for myself, I realized that I had every single shade already! Talk about a bummer.

It’s different for me when I buy something that I know I already have, I set my expectations accordingly and I while it’s in transit, I can defend the entire purchase in 10 different languages by the time it arrives! I have time to convince myself that I needed yet another gold eyeshadow to keep the other nine gold shadows in my collection company.

But I didn’t mentally prep for that before this came so I have to admit, it was kind of a bummer when I swatched it. I pulled out my Z Palette filled with Looxi Beauty highlighters and it didn’t take long before I had dupes for everything.

This Glow Kit is a fantastic piece and I really like the pigmentation and shade selection, but you can purchase all these shades from Looxi for $30 AND support an indie makeup brand while doing it. Now you won’t get the cool packaging or name brand, but you will get the EXACT same glow!

First Impression: Tarte Cosmetics x MakeupShayla Tarteist Contour Palette

I typically don’t purchase from Tarte Cosmetics because they rarely create base shades that match my skintone. Some of their formulas are to die for, but if I can’t find foundation to match my skin, what’s the point? I was so excited when they announced their collaboration with makeup artist and beauty guru @makeupshayla: a contour palette for medium/dark skintones. I was super intrigued so I purchased it and now that I’ve had a chance to swatch, I wanted to share my initial thoughts with you guys. Keep reading for more!

Before I get to swatches, I just need to remind you (and me) that this is a contour palette and face powders are created differently than eyeshadows or highlighters because they have a different purpose. The goal of a face powder is to blend into the face so it looks natural, it’s not meant to be a different color than the skin or stand out in any other way.

When I first swatched this I had to remind myself that the point of this was to sculpt my face in a way that looks natural. Therefore, the products needed to match my skintone. So when I swatched, I needed to look for shade matches (one shade lighter and one shade darker) than my natural skintone.

With that being said, here is the Tarte Cosmetics x MakeupShayla contour palette!

Based on these swatches, I was incredibly skeptical about how it would perform on my face. I was thinking immediately about the lack of pigmentation, but I had to stop myself because this is exactly what I need to contour my face. I don’t need some crazy rich, dark brown to contour. I need a greige brown that is subtle enough to look natural and will blend well into my liquid foundation without looking patchy. And that is exactly what #4 does.

The only shade that I was just shaking my head at was the blush (#5). This did not even swatch, so I don’t know if it was my finger or what, but it was not having it! I’m going to use this as much as I can this week on top of different foundations and concealers so I’ll find the best combo for my skin.

Back to positive things, I love that the pans are magnetic and are interchangeable. I’ve got several single highlighters that I can easily swap out with some of these if I want to travel with this as my “face palette”. That’s more appealing to me than a Z Palette which I have nightmares about traveling with!

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in ‘That Glow’

The queen Anastasia Beverly Hills released two, four pan highlighter palettes earlier this year and all the highlighter gods were pleased! These palettes, called Glow Kits, are ridiculously pigmented and are key to achieving the maximum strobe effect. I threw these all over my face so to see shades on my skintone and hear how fabulous these are, keep reading!

So first impression of this palette – “Out of the four of these, I’ve got to have dupes for at least 3/4.”

I was struggling just to find dupes for two! These are incredible shades and if you are a brown beauty like me, the Glow Kit in ‘That Glow’ won’t let you down. The whole palette is like a ‘one-stop-shop’ for the everyday makeup lover. It gives you a place where you can have several different highlighters all in one space.

The design of the palette (incredibly thin, about to length of my hand) is easy to handle and a great option for those looking to travel.

On to the formulation – I really wish I had  Anastasia single illuminator to compare formulas, but I don’t so I’m trying to compare it to every other highlighter I have (which is creeping towards 50ish). The formula reminds me of the Ofra Cosmetics highlighter formula, specifically in their collaboration with DupeThat. It’s definitely a powder, but it’s got a creamier consistency to it so the product is easily picked up on your brush without a ton of fallout. Two thumbs up for not wasting product!

I’m excited to bring you guys swatches! If you have any questions about the product or any other products, let me know in the comments below!
